Top Marks for Academy School's Roofing Procurement

Public Sector procurement specialist LHC’s ready made Flat Roofing (FR1) framework arrangement ensured a fast track works programme with Bauder waterproofing was completed on time and to budget at South Hunsley School and Sixth Form College.

East Yorkshire based South Hunsley School and Sixth Form College recently converted to Academy status and was keen to continue a programme of providing good quality educational accommodation through continued improvements to its resources and facilities.

As a priority, the complete roof and associated roof lights, on one of the older buildings, required replacement and work needed to be completed by end of March 2012.

To ensure the work could move quickly onto site, whilst remain compliant with OJEU and UK Building Regulations for the £280k project, South Hunsley School and Sixth Form College utilised LHC’s new pre-tendered FR1 framework arrangement.

To ensure best value the school immediately organised a mini tender, with the winning contractor being Hodgson & Allon, a new company to LHC, appointed to serve Yorkshire and Humberside.

Detailed planning by school Premises and Safety manager, Jon Hey, LHC and Hodgson & Allon ensured that everyone was kept fully informed of the plans and progress whilst all health and safety standards were stringently adhered too.

Jon Hey commented: “Choosing to use the LHC FR1 framework arrangement saved us both time and resources, which proved invaluable to this project. Being an Academy and independent from Local Authorities, we no longer have the extra resource at our disposal.

“The roofing desperately needed replacing and this procurement route has allowed work to begin on site quickly, whilst ensuring disruption is kept to a minimum and all who attend the school were safe and secure.

“With the works now complete, the results are excellent, not just from an aesthetics perspective, but also the improved thermal efficiencies are clear, with the school feeling overall warmer. This will undoubtedly lead to significant energy savings in the future.”

LHC, together with contractor Hodgson & Allon, relied on joint communications with the school to ensure works could be completed around learning timetables. Staff and students also received regular updates on the works, with a dedicated point of contact available throughout the programme.

John Sayers of Hodgson & Allon added: “As a responsible contractor, we are committed to ensuring staff and students are informed of how improvement projects are progressing.

“At South Hunsley School and Sixth Form College, this is especially important due to the issues surrounding carrying out a fast track programme of roofs, during term time. To keep on schedule, we had to factor in replacing rooflights at weekends and maintain constant communications to isolate areas of works. This was also to ensure the complete safety for all those who attend the school.”

LHC has also maintained a continued independent presence during the works programme, to act as site liaison officer for the school and contractor until the project is completed, to ensure that the level of service being provided is to the highest quality standards.

So impressed with LHC, South Hunsley School and Sixth Form College has taken advantage of additional efficiency benefits available by becoming an associate member. This represents the first Academy to become an LHC member.

John Skivington, LHC Director concluded: “The key to the ongoing success of this works programme is the level of interaction between all parties, to ensure the roof is replaced safely, with minimum disruption to the school’s daily activities and still in-keeping with the tight deadline.

“For South Hunsley School and Sixth Form College, the advantage of using LHC is that we have already carried out the necessary checks to ensure local contractors such as Hodgson & Allon can start on site quickly and deliver high quality products that will make a difference to the school. Even after work is complete, if any issues do arise, LHC will be on hand to work with all parties to resolve them.”
