Product sustainability
How we are maintaining the performance of our solutions whilst supporting the environment
The principal function of a roof is to protect buildings and people but a flat roof can also provide a huge range of sustainability benefits. By incorporating insulation, modern, sustainable flat roofs can improve thermal performance and reduce the energy consumption of a building. Not only that, they can provide biodiversity, amenity space and urban cooling through the addition of a green roof, renewable energy generation in the form of a solar photovoltaic array, and adding a blue roof can provide sustainable urban drainage systems (SuDS).
At a product level we are looking at modern ways to maintain the performance of our products whilst supporting the environment. This embraces elements not only for recycled content and recyclability at end of life, but also responsible sourcing for raw materials that minimise embodied carbon and the use of fossil fuel derivatives.
Utilising biomass balance in the production of our ECO FF insulation
Our BauderECO FF flat roof insulation is manufactured largely from biomass waste comprising residues from agriculture (plant stems, plant leaves, threshed corn cobs etc); recycled materials from our manufactured PIR offcuts (approximately 1%); and calcium carbonate from natural shell waste from the food industry to incorporate with a glass fleece for the board's facings.
Recycled content in our products
Working closely with our suppliers and using data from extensive research, we have steadily increased the recycled content of many of our products without detrimental effects on their durability, performance, or longevity of service.
Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs)
An EPD measures the environmental impact of a product, and the declarations quantifiably demonstrate the environmental performance of products.
Integrity Next
Evaluating supply chains can be an enormously complex and time-consuming procedure. In order to simplify and quantify our commitment to a secure and sustainable supply chain Bauder have partnered with Integrity Next.
BauderECO FF: when biomass becomes flat roof insulation for a sustainable future
Our first step towards a sustainable future without compromising the quality and established long-term performance of our PIR insulation is in BauderECO FF.
Utilising the biomass balance approach, our ECO FF insulation is manufactured from 80% biomass-based raw materials. This is the start of our journey towards removing the use of fossil raw materials in Bauder insulation products.
Low embodied carbon compared to standard PIR insulation that uses 100% raw material from conventional fossil fuel derivatives based on the biomass balance approach. ECO FF is manufactured using renewable raw materials derived from biomass waste and residues from, for example, agricultural production, crop or food processing.
ECO FF holds REDcert2 sustainability certification: REDcert2-904-39352401. This is third party auditing for the use of sustainable materials in the chemical industry. This is for the chemicals used to make this PIR insulation and the finished product itself.
BBA certification is in progress to verify our performance data and, upon successful completion of testing will be added to our current PIR certificate.
The flatboards are available in three thicknesses to meet different thermal requirements or U-values.
- 125 mm achieves an approximate U-value of 0.18 Wm2K.
- 160 mm achieves an approximate U-value of 0.14 Wm2K.
- 205mm (two boards 125 + 80mm) achieves an approximate U-value of 0.11 Wm2K.
The ECO FF insulation has been tested and can be incorporated in to warm roof construction when specifying our Bauder Total Roof System including the system’s green roof scenarios, and Bauder Thermofol PVC single ply system.
ECO FF has the same fire performance of our conventional PIR insulation.
Specifying ECO FF is easy for all these solutions, particularly within our BTRS system where the BauderPLANT E root resistant cap sheet will be incorporated for all green roof and PV solutions. If weight loading is a factor for the project, then the Bauder Thermofol PVC system for extensive green roofs, biosolar and solar PV is a consideration.

Bauder solutions for sustainable rooftops
To ensure all flat roofs maximise the roof space to support the environment, it is important to consider how a green roof, blue roof, solar PV and insulation can be incorporated into a new build construction.
Photovoltaics
Our photovoltaic solutions deliver energy generation on flat and green roofs. The waterproofing system beneath remains intact and without compromise due to the installation method.
