Green and Blue Roofs
Support the environment with green spaces for people and wildlife, and rooftop SuDS when incorporating a blue roof.
Green and blue roofs
Green and blue roofs are important for the modern world as they both support the environment around us in different ways. These roofs can be specified together on the same roof space and can even incorporate a biosolar PV array to maximise the roof space.
In addition to the ecological and aesthetic functions, green roofs are becoming a central building block for restricting rainfall into drainage systems.
Bauder has created many traditional green roofs as well as diverse ones such as parkland, allotments, Japanese gardens and zoological enclosures. We use recycled and reclaimed materials in the landscaping components of our green roofs, further enhancing the environmental benefits of a Bauder green roof.
The way rainwater is handled in cities is currently undergoing fundamental changes with the emphasis moving to attenuation rather than fostering channelling and run-off. A blue roof is specifically designed to attenuate measured amounts of not only rainfall but also stormwater for a 1:100-year event. The stormwater is then released at a specified flow rate over a set period of time, typically 48 hours.
Every green roof also reduces and delays the runoff of rainfall and the greater the depth of substrate the greater the attenuation ability.
Our green and blue roof solutions
Modern buildings are required to have as little impact on their surrounding environment as possible. Using a Bauder green or blue roof or both is the perfect opportunity to maximise the traditionally unused space of a flat roof especially when also incorporating a biosolar PV array. So much better than just using the space for rooftop plants or machinery.
Now the specifier can turn a flat roof into a usable facility.
How Bauder systems deliver solutions that support the environment
Our sustainably focused green and blue roof solutions, improve biodiversity and create recreational spaces for people to enjoy and retain rainfall and stormwater.
Find out how our range of reinforced bitumen membrane systems, single ply, hot melt and cold liquid applied waterproofing is suitable beneath the different types of green and blue roofs. and how adding a biosolar PV array maximises a roof space and generates renewable energy.
A blue roof offers a sustainable drainage method designed to manage stormwater on a flat roof for up to a 48-hour period. Ideal for urban areas where ground-based attenuation systems are limited or where construction is being carried out within a flood sensitive area.
Each green roof brings back a piece of nature and the roof space can be vegetated to suit the access levels desired. Our green roofs can be designed specifically to support a biodiverse habitat through to creating outdoor spaces for people to enjoy.
Green and blue roofs are increasingly becoming a criteria for planning, especially in urban areas where the drivers are to increase the availability of natural habitats for insects and associated wildlife and to reduce surging volumes of stormwater entering drainage systems.
Green and blue roofs certainly contribute to the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) or Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology (BREEAM) score alongside all the other factors for the building that need to be considered for these accreditations.
Across Europe, the standards most widely recognised as comprehensively covering green roofs are those of the Forschungsgesllschaft Landsschaftsentwicklung Landsschafttsbau (FLL) and in the UK by the Green Roof Organisation (GRO). We adopt and follow these well respected standards for our green roof products and technical design service.
Green and blue roofs add another dimension to the roof turning it from a flat area previously only used for locating plant and machinery to one that creates a facility to be used for the benefit of people and the environment. These can contribute to an increase in property value.
