Benefits

Bitumen is made up of organic liquids that are highly sticky, viscous, and waterproof. When used in roofing materials it provides a robust waterproofing solution with long-term durability and life-expectancy. Bauder’s bituminous membrane roofing systems incorporate SBS modified elastomeric bitumen membranes and highly efficient PIR insulation meeting current UK Building Regulations Part B for External Fire Protection. Our system application features torch-free and torch-safe installation techniques for detailing on, or adjacent to combustible materials.

Bituminous membrane roofing systems are durable and long lasting. They are suitable for commercial and refurbishment building projects. We have seven systems within our bituminous membrane portfolio – Bauder Total Roof System PLUS, Bauder Total Roof System, Bauderflex, Airtech, Pro F, THERM ‘Stripes’ and Torch-free detailing. All are suitable for roofs of various shapes and sizes including green roof projects. Contact Bauder’s team of specialists, they will be able to tell you which is advisable.

Why Bituminous Systems?

A key advantage of bituminous roofing membrane systems is the exceptionally long lifespan. They require little upkeep over the years, although annual maintenance is recommended to extend its lifespan. These systems can take limited foot traffic and loads associated with installation and maintenance - sharp objects or concentrated loads should be avoided.

Bauder works hard to ensure all products meet the latest criteria for various accreditations.

Installation and Maintenance

These systems are installed using a few different methods. Self Adhesive Bitumen installation involving heat-activated 'DUO' technology, hot air welding techniques or adhesive bonding with PIR flat board insulation to provide solutions that are durable, resilient to the natural elements and give excellent fire resistance. Bauder Approved Contractors are the only people fully trained and certified to install our products, providing the necessary experience that our exceptional guarantee demands.

To keep the roof in prime condition, practical maintenance should be carried out. This includes:

  • Cutting back tree limbs that overhang the roof to give a 1 metre clearance outside the roof edge. This will significantly reduce blockage of drainage ways due to fallen leaves.
  • Removal of any vegetation growth that may have occurred, taking care not to damage the waterproofing.
  • Ensuring that any items of plant/equipment that may have been introduced to the roof are sited on suitable isolated slabs, with additional surface protection beneath, and that any fixings that may have been used to secure them, do not penetrate the waterproofing.

Green Credentials

Bituminous roofing systems can be used for green roofs with a root resistant cap sheet which stops the roots from penetrating the waterproofing system. The membranes are made from bitumen and polyester.

Which System is Right for my Project?

Get in touch with Bauder’s team. Our experts can help you choose between our six bituminous membrane systems.

  • Bauder Total Roof System PLUS
Bauder's premium waterproofing system, utilising the latest manufacturing technology for a dual formulation capping sheet. Suitable for use in both refurbishment and new build projects particularly when long life-span and high durability are required.

  • Bauder Total Roof System

Suitable for a variety of applications on both new build and refurbishment projects and can be used in warm, cold and inverted roof scenarios. There is also the option of using a root resistant cap sheet, making this waterproofing system ideal for green roof situations.

  • Bauderflex

Resistant to European climatic conditions, it resists impact and tearing. Satisfies requirements of Part B of Building Regulations, it can be used in warm and cold roof designs and to overlay existing roofing materials.

  • Airtech

A 4.2mm thick elastomeric bitumen membrane. Withstands loads of up to 2000Kg/m2. Reinforcement used in capping sheet is made from recycled polyester. Bauder insulation is CFC and HCFC free with zero ODP.

  • Pro F

Designed to be installed on flat roofs with a minimum fall of 1:60 (1 degree) and roofs with slopes up to 25°. 5.2mm thick. Withstands climatic extremes of over 100⁰C variation. Fire retardant prevents external spread of flame.

  • THERM ‘Stripes’

Only suitable for refurbishment projects. BauderTHERM 'Stripes' system can overlay the existing system to extend the life expectancy of the roof by at least 15 years.

  • Torch-free detailing

Complete range of self-adhesive bitumen membranes. To be used in the vicinity of combustible construction materials located on, or connected to, the roof such as timber substrates or upstands; abutments to cladding, roof tiles, slates or thatch; or debris such as dry leaf material that is at risk from ignition. Installation follows industry best practice and conforms to BS 8217:2005.

We have case studies and examples of our work available for you to look at. Of course, each project is unique in its requirements. If you are looking for a Bituminous membrane roof system, then get in touch with our team to discuss your project’s individual needs.

Safe2Torch is an NFRC campaign developed to significantly reduce the risk of roof fires when using gas torches, either to dry out roofs or when used to install torch-on membranes.
