Orchards Academy
Orchards Academy is a modern school featuring a sustainable roof designed around a biodiverse green roof with a integrated photovoltaic system. Our design delivers a durable, efficient roofing solution that meets the academy’s long‑term operational needs.
Synopsis
This new £32.8m school project for the Department for Education delivers a high‑quality, modern learning environment. Bauder provided the roofing solution, centred on the Bauder Total Green Roof System with an integrated biosolar array and Flora 3 seed mix to maximise biodiversity and renewable energy generation. The complex roof design combined waterproofing, drainage falls, green roof build‑ups and PV installation, all within a tight footprint and with multiple performance requirements.
Because of the number of roof interfaces including penetrations, upstands and transitions between green roof areas, PV zones and inspection points, early design involvement was essential. Close collaboration across the project team ensured that these details, along with structural considerations and access requirements, were fully coordinated before work began. This helped avoid rework on site and ensured the roof remained buildable while meeting all loading and drainage requirements.
The completed roof provides robust long-term performance while supporting sustainability, energy efficiency, and the school’s operational requirements.
