Halifax Bus Station
Halifax Bus Station features a Bauder Total Green Roof System with photovoltaic integration, delivering long‑term roof performance while bringing nature into a dense urban setting, supporting biodiversity, and contributing to the project’s recognition with a CIHT Environment and Sustainability Award.
Synopsis
Halifax Bus Station is a new‑build transport hub developed to replace an ageing facility that no longer met modern accessibility, capacity and passenger comfort expectations. The new design focuses on providing level, fully covered access throughout the building, improving usability for commuters, and accommodates 19 bus stands alongside supporting facilities and infrastructure designed to allow for future electric bus charging.
Sustainability, durability and long‑term performance were central considerations within the roof design, which was specified with a Bauder Total Green Roof System combining extensive green roof build‑ups with photovoltaic zones. Central roof areas were finished with an extensive green roof system incorporating drainage, substrate and a wildflower blanket to support biodiversity, while helping to manage rainwater runoff within a dense urban environment.
Plant deck areas were constructed on a concrete deck and waterproofed using a Bauder Bakor hot melt system, with a water retention layer and paving and gravel finishes. These zones also incorporated integrated photovoltaic panels, enabling renewable energy generation alongside environmental performance without compromising the roof build‑up.
Installation was carried out on a busy live site with limited space for material storage and lifting operations, requiring careful planning and coordination throughout the programme. Despite these constraints, the roofing works were successfully delivered as part of the wider redevelopment.
The completed roof provides effective rainwater management, improved thermal efficiency and long‑term system reliability, while introducing biodiversity into a heavily urban setting and delivering tangible environmental benefits to the local community. In recognition of its sustainability credentials, Halifax Bus Station won the Environment and Sustainability Award at the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation Yorkshire and the Humber Awards 2023, with the project’s green roof and environmental design cited as key contributors to its success.
I think this will be a system. Might want to check. If so, we need to say Bauder Bakor hot melt system
