Beacon Academy

Synopsis

This large‑scale project formed a major component of the new £20m Beacon Academy, delivering six high‑performance roof areas designed as sustainability exemplars for the facility. Spanning multiple roof types and complex technical interfaces, the project combined advanced waterproofing, renewable energy generation, natural ventilation systems, and a substantial biodiverse green roof.

A Bauder Total Green Roof System was installed to provide long‑term durability and the structural resilience needed to support multiple specialist systems. The installation incorporated 402 Bauder solar PV panels to generate on‑site renewable electricity, 39 Monodraught wind catchers to enhance natural ventilation, and approximately 200 tonnes of Bauder Flora 3 substrate to form a seeded green roof that boosts biodiversity and contributes to thermal regulation.

The roof build‑ups used Bauder PIR 140mm FA‑TE insulation boards, offering low thermal conductivity and forming part of a warm roof system designed to optimise the building’s overall energy performance. These were overlaid with 3mm Bauder TEC KSA DUO underlay to ensure a robust waterproofing layer capable of supporting the combined surface loads.

The combination of green and biosolar elements meant the installation needed careful coordination, particularly as changing weather and the volume of specialist components created a constantly shifting work environment. Even with these challenges, the project was delivered to a strong technical standard and aligned fully with the academy’s environmental and operational aims.

On completion, the roofs were issued with a 30‑year Bauder Waterproofing System Guarantee and a 30‑year Green Roof System Guarantee, giving the academy confidence in the long‑term performance and resilience of its sustainable roofing systems.
