Ayrshire Hospice

Synopsis

The Ayrshire Hospice is a Scottish charity dedicated to providing specialist palliative and end of life care to communities across Ayrshire and Arran. This transformative project formed part of an extension to a 201 year old Category ‘B’ listed building, enabling the charity to expand and enhance the vital services it delivers.

The vision was to create a sustainable, high quality environment that integrates seamlessly with the existing structure while introducing a contemporary architectural element to the rear of the property. Respecting the traditional character of the area was essential, ensuring the new extension complemented its historic setting. At roof level, a sedum covering contributes to biodiversity and allows the new structure to blend naturally into its surroundings.

A Bauder Thermofol PVC system was selected for its root resistant properties beneath the sedum and its ability to transition cleanly to the exposed canopy, where BauderPVC DP 25 décor profiles provided an aesthetically refined finish. Due to the number of layers in the green roof build up, the design required exceptional dimensional accuracy to ensure correct performance, compliance with client and local authority expectations, and precise procurement of all materials. This was particularly important given the complex geometry of the roof and the technical detail involved in integrating the sedum retention system.

Delivering the project within such a constrained site was a major achievement. With the canal on one side and a narrow residential road on the other, meticulous logistical planning was essential, from scheduling deliveries to coordinating working areas and addressing additional health and safety considerations. Despite the challenges, the result is a high quality, resilient roofing solution that supports the building’s long term sustainability and the hospice’s mission of providing exceptional care.
