Bauder supports career transition for military leavers

Social Value

On May 13th, Bauder representatives visited Lovell’s Woolwich regeneration site in south-east London to volunteer their flat-roofing expertise as part of the Lovell Partnerships Employer Insight Day. The event brought together military service leavers, veterans, reservists, military families and Building Heroes learners for a practical introduction to career opportunities across the construction and built environment sectors. Attendees benefited from senior leadership presentations, trade-focused discussions, and supply chain engagement.

Bauder played an active, hands-on role throughout the day, delivering live roofing demonstrations that allowed participants to experience specialist systems first-hand. Bauder site technician Ian Richardson showcased bitumen membrane applications, while fellow Bauder site tech David Veiga demonstrated single ply flat roofing techniques, giving attendees the opportunity to practise on-site skills themselves.

The interactive sessions proved especially popular, encouraging confidence-building and direct engagement with experienced professionals. There was also the chance to win a £50 Amazon voucher provided by Bauder.

In attendance was David Owens, a Bauder architectural technical manager and former Warrant Officer in the British Army, who commented, “I was really impressed by both the quality of people who attended and the genuine interest they showed. For anyone leaving the Armed Forces and exploring career opportunities, these events are incredibly valuable, and Building Heroes are doing a fantastic job in hosting them.”

He continued, “Bauder supported T&T Roofing Ltd, giving practical demonstrations on applying our Thermofol PVC single-ply system and reinforced bituminous membrane. It was great to see such a wide range of skills on display from those who got involved.”

Bauder’s involvement builds on its ongoing efforts to help bridge the skills gap affecting the flat roofing and wider UK construction industries. This month, Bauder continues its participation in the Skills Centre’s roofing and cladding skills bootcamps for London residents, helping open pathways into sustainable employment.

By sharing technical expertise and offering practical experience to individuals considering a move into construction, Bauder continues to help strengthen local skills, support career progression, and contribute to a more resilient, inclusive workforce across the UK construction sector.
