Synopsis

Woodlands Primary School, part of a multi-academy trust in Tamworth, Staffordshire, faced a critical need for roof refurbishment. Following a comprehensive stock condition survey of the schools within the trust, the roof areas were identified as being beyond their serviceable life, necessitating urgent action.

The specification

The client’s primary objective was to replace the defective waterproofing system  whilst simultaneously reducing the school’s energy bills and carbon footprint. To meet these goals, Bauder specified a combination of advanced roofing systems and solar energy solutions. The Bauderflex system provided a cost-effective solution offering durable and reliable protection.

The insulation consisted of a combination of 140 mm BauderPIR FA-TE insulation and BauderPIR FA G16 tapered insulation, enhancing thermal efficiency and improving drainage performance to meet current building regulations. Additionally, the BauderSOLAR F XL PV system (self-funded by the trust), enabled the generation of renewable energy, contributing to sustainability and reducing operational costs.

Project challenges

Undertaking the roof refurbishment of an operational school presented several logistical challenges. The site remained open to children and staff throughout the project, requiring careful coordination to ensure minimal disruption to the school’s daily operations. Safety measures were strictly adhered to, and the project was meticulously planned to maintain a smooth workflow while prioritising the safety and comfort of the school community.

The refurbishment included the installation of the Bauder Solar PV system, enabling the school to generate renewable energy, reducing its carbon footprint, and supporting sustainability goals.
