Science Museum – West Hall Building
This refurbishment required a carefully engineered roofing solution for the museum’s West Hall roof, resolving long standing water ingress, complex rooftop plant constraints, and demanding performance requirements while protecting the integrity of the historic building.
Synopsis
The Science Museum in South Kensington is one of London’s most significant cultural institutions, occupying a historic building where maintaining the integrity of the original fabric is critical. Persistent water ingress on the West Hall roof prompted a detailed investigation, with Bauder undertaking a full survey that included core sampling to understand the condition of the existing system and the performance of the thermal elements. An upgrade to the U value was required to improve thermal efficiency and futureproof the building.
Bauder specified the Bauder Total Roof System PLUS (BTRS PLUS) system for the refurbishment. This was selected for its proven performance, compatibility with the existing structure, and suitability for achieving the required 25 year guarantee. Tapered insulation was introduced to enhance drainage falls across the roof, addressing ponding issues and reducing long term risk of moisture ingress.
A key challenge was the extensive mechanical units situated across the roof. As these could not be removed, a cold applied liquid waterproofing system was installed beneath and around the plant areas. Inverted insulation was incorporated in these zones to maintain continuity of thermal performance. The existing symphonic drainage system also had to remain in place, requiring careful detailing to dress the new system seamlessly around the drainage infrastructure.
The completed solution delivers a robust, thermally effective, fully warranted waterproofing system tailored to the unique constraints of this landmark building.
