A tailored roofing design was developed to enhance safety, energy performance, and environmental value, combining green roof systems, PV technology, and fire safe materials to support long term resilience in a specialist care setting.
Synopsis
As part of the Transforming Care Scheme, Elizabeth Close provides specialist accommodation in the form of self contained bungalows for individuals with learning disabilities and complex care needs, alongside on site staff units offering 24/7 support. The roofing element of the development was designed to complement this model of care by delivering a safe, efficient, and environmentally considerate solution suited to a sensitive residential setting.
The specification combines an extensive green roof with an integrated photovoltaic system, creating a living roofscape that supports biodiversity while generating on site renewable energy for each individual unit. This dual purpose approach not only enhances the ecological value of the scheme but also helps reduce long term running costs for residents and care providers.
Non combustible mineral wool insulation was selected to provide enhanced fire protection for the timber frame buildings, ensuring the roof build up met stringent safety requirements. A single ply waterproofing membrane was chosen to keep the overall system weight low while providing a clean, modern, and durable waterproofing finish suitable for both the green roof and PV interfaces.
Each bungalow had a bespoke PV mounting design to ensure it achieved its specific kWh generation target, reflecting the varying orientations and roof layouts across the site. The careful coordination of green roof components, solar technology, and lightweight waterproofing created a high performing roofing system that supports both environmental sustainability and occupant safety.
Overall, the project delivered a well integrated roofing solution that met all performance goals, improved the site’s ecological value, reduced energy demand, and supported the wider aims of the Transforming Care Scheme, resulting in a robust, safe, and highly successful outcome.
