Ardessie Broodstock
State-of-the-art broodstock facility with Bauder Total Green Roof system (BTGRS) including a sedum blanket roof system
Synopsis
Mowi Scotland's new salmon broodstock facility at Ardessie, Scotland is a landmark project set to secure the company’s egg supply by 2025. This will allow them to produce up to 50 million Mowi-strain Atlantic salmon eggs annually. The purpose-built site replaces third-party and imported egg reliance, by ensuring year-round production using advanced recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) for temperature and photoperiod control.
Located on the site of a former fish farm, the development includes three buildings carefully designed to integrate sensitively with their rural surroundings of the Scottish Highland landscape. Convery Prenty Shields Architects’ design uses dual-pitch forms, dark green cladding, and Bauder’s green roof system to minimise visual impact and enhance biodiversity.
Beyond environmental considerations, the facility supports rural development, creating 8-10 skilled jobs in aquaculture and related sciences, on top of its current workforce of 1,500 people. Bauder’s green roof plays a key role in meeting the project's sustainability and aesthetic goals.
