London Construction Awards

Bauder’s new blue roof sustainable drainage system, BauderBLUE, which was launched earlier this year, has been nominated for the London Construction Awards (LCA) in the Product Innovation of the Year category.

Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SuDS)

The development and expansion of towns and cities has seen exponential use of impervious surfaces causing artificially high rates of rainwater runoff. This, along with climate change triggering increased storm conditions, is becoming overwhelming for our traditional drainage systems of surface water sewers and lateral drains. To combat this, new buildings in flood risk areas are required to include a Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SuDS).

The ideal SuDS would aim to replicate natural drainage patterns by reducing peak discharges to the struggling sewers, increase infiltration and provide amenity benefits. This leaves few feasible options for inner city developments. The most practical and beneficial SuDS is a roof top solution which incorporates a water attenuation system that deals with the water at source, and a green roof which can offer social space, a biodiverse habitat or simply add to the aesthetics of the structure.

BauderBLUE

Bauder’s new blue roof system provides the perfect solution for urban areas where ground-based attenuation systems are limited. It is specifically engineered to restrict the discharge of stormwater to a calculated and predesigned flow rate to significantly slow down the volume of water leaving the site. As the storm passes, water continues to discharge from the roof at a controlled rate over a 24- hour period which helps to avoid downstream or localised flooding. Fundamentally, a blue roof is designed to attenuate water and should not be considered as a water storage solution.

Bauder’s new blue roof sustainable drainage system, BauderBLUE, which was launched earlier this year, has been nominated for the London Construction Awards (LCA) in the Product Innovation of the Year category.

The key component to the blue roof is the flow restrictor which acts as a weir, slowing the rate of the water leaving the roof. The outlet overflow is inserted into the baseplate, measured, marked and cut to the specified Hmax for the roof. There are no moving parts to the Bauder flow restrictor, making it simple to install and easy to maintain.
