Applications

The sedum blanket landscaping option is ideal on all buildings, especially for refurbishment projects where the existing roof structure loading is limited.

It provides instant plant coverage as the sedums are grown to maturity before being available for harvesting, ensuring that they acclimatize quickly to their rooftop location.

1-2° or “Totally Flat” Roofs

Structures of this type present the green roof with the problem that, no matter how much care is taken in its construction; some standing water will arise on the roof finish. This, in turn, can have a damaging effect on the vegetation if the substrate becomes saturated where localised ponding occurs. Given the issues this raises, we would recommend that our SDF drainage mat is used underneath the Xero Flor blanket to minimize the risk of saturation of the substrate within the blanket.

3°-9° “Traditional” Flat Roofs

This roof slope is ideally suited for the Xero Flor blanket, allowing the most cost-effective use of the components, as drainage is easily achieved down the slope and there will only ever be very minor ponding which will not effect the living roof vegetation. It should be noted that, when the slope of the roof is in excess of 5°, the use of a leaky pipe irrigation system will be beneficial to ensure the optimum performance of the vegetation.

10°-25° “Sloping” Flat Roofs

Roofs with this degree of fall represent a challenge with regard to the sheer forces that can be generated by the slope at the waterproofing/Xero Flor blanket interface. This is addressed by the use of the Bauder Sedum Blanket Retention Strips, which are fixed to the surface of the waterproofing system prior to the installation of the Xero Flor blankets. It should also be noted that water retention within the substrate mix will be significantly reduced, thus making the use of a leaky pipe irrigation system essential for the survival of the vegetation.

Barrel Vault Roofs

The Bauder Xero Flor blanket system can be supplied to site in rolls of up to 10m in length, thus making the product uniquely suited for installation on Barrel Vault Roofs. Whilst the correct specification and careful management of the logistics of this type of installation is required, the Bauder Xero Flor Mat system in long rolls will generally provide the optimum solution, both in cost and performance terms, for this type of structure.

Whatever the slope of your roof, we would always recommend that you seek advice from the Bauder Technical Services department, to ensure that you achieve the optimum solution for your project, both on a performance and cost basis.
